Founded in 1991, Hope Solutions "formerly Contra Costa Interfaith Housing" is a vibrant and socially responsive non-profit agency that provides permanent housing and vital support services to over 2,000 families and individuals in Contra Costa County who are homeless or are at-risk for homelessness. Over 40 faith-based communities support our work, although there are no religious requirements or affiliations required to receive services.

A FEW OF US...


DeanneExecutive Director—lives in Central Contra Costa County with her husband and three children. She enjoys hiking the East Bay hills, camping, reading, cooking, and cheering too loudly at her kids’ games.


Alex—Chief Operating Officer lives in Walnut Creek with his wife, son, and dog. Alex has an MSW and is a self-described macro social worker. He is an avid reader and a huge baseball fan (Go Giants!). He loves spending time at home with his family making food, listening to jazz, and relaxing.


Sara—Director of Programs—lives in West Contra Costa County with her partner and has raised four children. She enjoys walking, knitting, dancing, writing poetry, reading, and Burning Man. Sara is an LCSW and holds a Doctorate in Education.


Bill—Director of Housing Programs—lives in Central Contra Costa County with his partner and is involved in raising his godson. Bill is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who has been working with under-served populations for more than 20 years. He also serves on the Contra Costa County Healthcare for the Homeless Co-Applicant Board. He enjoys reading, gardening, and meditation. 


Christina—Director of Finance—lives in Pleasant Hill with her husband, three children, and their dog. In her spare time, she volunteers at her children’s schools and with Girl Scouts is on the PTA Board and local AYSO Board. She also enjoys attending her children’s many sports activities.


Tanya—Director of Housing Navigation—lives in East Contra Costa County. She is married with one daughter and two sons. Tanya has a Master's in Counseling Psychology and has worked with under-served populations for over 15 years. She enjoys music, comedy, movies, exercising, and watching basketball games.


Jasmine Tarkoff—Consulting Director of Strategic Initiatives—lives in Contra Costa County and is married with three children and three dogs. Jasmine has an MS in Organizational Leadership and Innovation. She is the co-convener of the Multi-faith ACTION Coalition and serves on the boards of the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program as well as the Tourette Association of America.

 

Kristina—Director of Human Resources—lives in Cordelia with her modern-day blended family and is a proud Air Force Mom. She enjoys spending time with family, yoga, indoor cycling, hiking, brunch with friends, and loves to laugh. She believes if you look for the good in all things, you will find it.

 

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR:

Hope Solutions seeks an energetic and dynamic Policy Associate/Community Organizer to support our Director of Strategic Initiatives to launch a two-year Partnership for the Bay’s Future Breakthrough grant project in partnership with the City of Antioch and the Multi-faith ACTION Coalition. The focus of the Breakthrough grant is to promote affordable housing development policy and practices in the City of Antioch, with a particular emphasis on community organizing with faith institutions and defining, advocating, and adopting new policies. The Policy Associate/Community Organizer will support the Director of Strategic Initiatives to plan and lead a grassroots organizing effort that amplifies the voices of low-income persons, disenfranchised individuals, minority ethnic and racial groups, and residents with lived experience. Additionally, the Associate will work closely with a newly hired Policy Fellow on staff at the City of Antioch to coordinate efforts and align work goals. This new position requires an individual with vision, initiative, and excellent relational and organizational skills. 


Supervisory Responsibility:  Oversee REP Leaders


WHAT YOU WILL DO:


Community Organizing

  • Develop in partnership with the steering committee, overall community organizing plan, and strategy, including working to prioritize and set goals and track progress
  • Work with the Director of Strategic Initiatives to develop mobilization and engagement strategies for grassroots organizations, community-based partners, faith-based organizations, and their leaders, including focus groups, surveys, and community conversations.
  • Develop and execute strategy for ongoing relationship-building with local elected officials


Resident Empowerment Program Leadership and Development

  • Lead the Resident Empowerment Program Leaders (REP) to develop strategies to recruit, hire, train, and coach additional colleagues with lived experience to assist with outreach, organizing, gathering input, and facilitating meetings.
  • Partner with City and County staff to identify and support opportunities for REPs and other partners to support policy development and advocacy.

Policy Development and Implementation

  • Based on community input, work with steering committee and fellow to define and propose new policies that will spur housing production and prevention.
  • Drive advocacy and ultimate adoption of these new policies


Organizational/Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Support the initiative with selected media and speaking appearances, participation in working groups, etc. Serve as a thought partner with the Director of Strategic Initiatives to help represent the organization in various political and public forums.
  • Draft, conduct research for, and help develop content for one-pagers, talking points, issue briefs, and presentations to be used with internal and external audiences to advance policy and community organizing activities.
  • Ensure website content is current and populated with relevant resources.
  • Manage the creation of the project’s social media content, including message development, content review, and editing in partnership with the HS Communications team.
  • Take independent initiative and actively and fully participates in helping to develop the project’s yearly goals/objectives and work plans.
  • Attend, and report on briefings, hearings, coalition meetings, and conference calls as needed.
  • Attend regular steering committee meetings and breakthrough grant cohort meetings
  • Track, report on, and analyze various legislative and regulatory actions relevant to this effort.
  • Professionally represent Hope Solutions in all circumstances.
  • Comply with policies, procedures, standards of practice, and outcome requirements for the program.
  • Comply with all legal/ethical professional guidelines for maintaining consumer confidentiality, protecting consumer rights, advocating on consumers’ behalf, and assuring consumer safety.
  • Comply with all local, state, and federal regulations and Hope Solutions policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  • On-call, after-hours, and backup work may be required.


Position Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required (additional graduate training is preferred); two to five years of relevant experience in community organizing and/or policy work; knowledge of affordable housing and/or issues of homelessness is a plus.
  • Must demonstrate strong writing and editing skills and convey information on complex issues both verbally and in writing using data and reasoning. Ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of audiences from government institutions to grassroots.
  • Experience working with coalitions of diverse groups and demonstrating a commitment to racial, ethnic, religious, and economic diversity and social justice.
  • Demonstrate strong attention to detail and data accuracy.
  • Must be able to work independently and must have the ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment regarding matters of significance.
  • Ability to perform well under pressure, be able to manage competing demands, be proactive, show resourcefulness, and adapt well to changing circumstances.
  • Be a self-starter and a team-oriented individual with strong interpersonal skills and a positive, professional attitude.
  • Be able to manage many projects simultaneously, through their life cycle in collaboration with various internal and external stakeholders.
  • Possess an ability to effectively establish and maintain working relationships with peers and constituents at all levels of the association.
  • Work with integrity and be reliable; look for ways to improve and monitor own work to ensure quality; meet deadlines; follow policies and procedures; and ensure that work responsibilities are covered when absent.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skill in various computer software applications such as Microsoft Office 2010 (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook, Calendar,) content management systems, social media platforms, Adobe Creative Suite, and survey tools. Experience with HTML, SPSS, and the use of other computing packages, such as Tableau, is preferred.
  • Experience analyzing data collected through web-based systems and surveys.
  • Hope Solutions requires all staff members to either be fully vaccinated (including a booster within six months of the last vaccination) or complete weekly testing.
  • Must have operational vehicle, auto insurance, valid California driver’s license, and be willing to drive for work.
  • Must pass LiveScan screening and TB test.
  • Salary contingent upon skill and experience.
